In order for Meerschaum pipes to be carved it needs to be soaked in water. Then it is placed inside the fire by artisans. The fire helps dry the mineral. After the mineral is dried the artisan inserts a shank and then adds a stem to the opposite side of what is going to be the pipe. Once a meerschaum is done, it is covered with a layer of  beeswax and then it is bleached. This process gives the pipe an unique look making each piece different from others.
